The IAABC Foundation DEI team works to support learning environments that are inclusive, accessible, and rooted in care.  Our work shapes how we approach education, community engagement, and dialogue across all Foundation initiatives.  When DEI-focused events are offered, they are one way we continue this commitment to thoughtful, equitable learning for the people behind the animals.

Understanding Trauma in Behavior Consulting: Building Trust, Safety, and Ethical Support

This webinar introduces the foundations of trauma-informed care and explores how they apply to animal trainers and behavior consultants. Participants will learn how trauma affects trust, communication, and client relationships — and how adopting trauma-informed practices can help avoid re-traumatization while building stronger, more compassionate partnerships with the people behind the animals. Grounded in principles already central to humane, ethical training, this session supports professionals in better serving clients and their animals.

The presentation will conclude with an opportunity for Q&A.

Event will be recorded and available for later viewing if you are not able to attend live.

Instructor:

Sami Griffin, KPA-CTP, CBCC-LA

Sami Griffin is an animal trainer and behavior consultant specializing in fear, anxiety, and aggression in cats and dogs.  Their work centers on supporting animals with complex emotional and behavioral needs, as well as the humans who care for them – particularly queer, neurodivergent and trauma-impacted pet parents.  Sami often works with highly emotional cases that involve aggression towards humans or pets in the home, fear of handling, and chronic stress.  Because of this, Sami focuses on building sustainable plans with clients that take into account everyone’s needs through an intersectional framework.  To achieve quality care for everyone, Sami collaborates closely with veterinarians, veterinary behavior teams, and mental health professionals to best support clients.

Jamie Thompson, LCSW

Jamie L Thompson is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Colorado and runs her private practice.  After loving and losing a dog with complex behavior needs, she began specializing in the human-animal bond.  She specifically works with clients around how complex pets can have negative impacts on human mental health, anticipatory grief, and actualized grief associated with death, euthaniasia and behavioral euthanasia.  She also works with Sam of Wise Whiskers Training to provide lunch-and-learns on various topics to veterinary clinics and staff.
